Dr Yankier Pijeira Perez

Overview

Yankier Pijeira Perez is a Research Officer at the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME) at 91É«Ç鯬. A qualified pharmacy technician with NHS experience in North Wales, he combines practical healthcare knowledge with strong academic expertise in health economics.

Originally from Cuba, Yankier holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Havana (2009), an MSc in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) from the University of Glasgow (2018), and a PhD in Health Economics from 91É«Ç鯬 (2025).

In 2015, he was awarded a bursary from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in HTA at the University of Glasgow. He subsequently received a University of Glasgow scholarship to continue with the Postgraduate Diploma in HTA (2016), followed by the Pharmacy Research Bursary Award from the NHS Wales Chief Pharmacists Group (2017), which contributed to the completion of his MSc. In 2020, he was awarded a scholarship from the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership (TMRP) to undertake his doctoral studies in Health Economics.

Yankier’s research focuses on optimising medicine use and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of new health technologies. He has particular expertise in estimating healthcare costs and health utilities to support evidence-based decision-making in HTA.

During his time at 91É«Ç鯬, he has actively represented CHEME and the University at a range of academic and public engagement events, including the National Eisteddfod 2023, the HTAi 2024 Annual Meeting in Seville, and other initiatives led by 91É«Ç鯬.

  • Public engagement in health economics took place at the Science Village during the 2023 National Eisteddfod in Wales, where staff and students of CHEME hosted an interactive stall engaging visitors of all ages. Activities included a card game exploring NHS costs and a creative exercise on measuring health and comparing healthcare interventions.
